Tecno's 25-year journey from consultancy to SustainTech pioneer

Professor Paolo Taticchi delivering a lecture.

UCL Centre for Sustainable Business Co-Director and Professor Paolo Taticchi has authored a new case study exploring the sustainability journey of Tecno Group – a Naples-born company – that, over 25 years, evolved from an energy tax recovery consultancy into a company operating at the intersection of sustainability and digital transformation.

The case examines how Tecno scaled its operations through proprietary platforms, integrated ESG capabilities into its core services, and established itself as a strategic partner to over 4,000 companies, 70% of which are SMEs. The study traces Tecno’s journey from its early years aligning incentives through a success-fee model, to the creation of data-driven tools like Kontrol-ON and the recent development of its integrated ESG platform Ardite.

In 2025, Tecno became the first company in Italy to pursue a Sustainable IPO, a listing that integrated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into every aspect of its governance, operations, and financial disclosures. With revenues reaching €26.4 million, and more than 50% generated through recurring contracts, Tecno’s platform-based model demonstrated how digital transformation, and sustainability could converge to drive long-term value creation.

Tecno’s client base of over 4,000 companies illustrates the growing demand for data-driven tools and advisory services in navigating regulatory complexity and climate-related accountability.

Co-authored with Allegra Fortunato, Head of Strategy at Tecno International, the case study offers a behind-the-scenes look at the strategic decisions, leadership dynamics, and disciplined execution that enabled Tecno to scale. It presents Tecno as a blueprint for how companies - especially mid-sized firms - can embed sustainability into their operations, build investor trust, and lead the way in Europe’s broader shift toward a more digital, resilient, and low-carbon economy.
