Biography

Dr. Christine A. Hemingway’s interdisciplinary work is geared towards the creation of social, environmental, and economic value through human agency and systems change. She is one of the founding scholars of the micro-foundations of corporate social responsibility (micro-CSR). This sociological and psychological perspective investigates responsible/irresponsible organizational contexts, and the development of formal and informal leaders, or activists, known as ‘corporate social entrepreneurs’ (CSE). Her pioneering work continues to inspire a practitioner movement and is widely cited in major scholarly journals. 

Christine has solely authored and co-authored 23 book chapters, international conference papers, blog articles and research publications in the Journal of Business Ethics, Business Ethics Quarterly, the Entrepreneurship Research Journal, Research in Ethical Issues in Organizations, and the Encyclopedia of Corporate Social Responsibility. Drawing upon her investigation of an anonymised $5bn FTSE 100 and Forbes Global 2000 company ‘Corporate Social Entrepreneurship: Integrity Within’ is based on ethnographic research and was published in the prestigious series called ‘Business, Value Creation and Society’, by the Cambridge University Press. 

Christine has held lectureships (Assistant Professor) at Goldsmiths University of London, and the universities of Loughborough, Hull, and the Aston Business School. Her visiting lectureships at the universities of Nottingham and Sheffield, include invited fellowships at the Darden School of Business UVA, as well as the Centre for Social Ontology at EPFL, Switzerland. She was previously appointed as a research fellow at Imperial College London, where she helped raise core funding for the Leonardo Centre on Business for Society.

Prior to returning to academic life, Christine’s senior management career was based within the headquarters of blue-chip multi-national corporations, with line management and budget responsibility for some globally recognised consumer brands. Her experience spanned a range of industries and continues to inform her research and teaching outputs.
